Leeds should ask Wolves about Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa

The 2018/19 campaign ended in disappointing fashion for Leeds United as they were dumped out of the Championship play-offs by Derby County.

It had looked for all the world that Leeds wouldn’t need the play-off route at Christmas. The Whites sat pretty at the summit at the half-way stage but collapsed during the latter stages of the campaign.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa has agreed to stick around next season and that is a massive positive.

The challenge for him prior to the first game is to keep his best players and also to bolster his ranks with some more quality.

One name who has been linked with a possible Elland Road switch is Wolves forward Helder Costa. that Leeds are eyeing up a loan deal for the 25-year-old.

The Portuguese performer only managed one goal and one assist during Wolves’ maiden Premier League campaign last season. He did net 15 goals and register 14 assists as they won the Championship title the year previous, however.

His ‘wing-man’ that year was Ivan Cavaleiro and the two offered devastating outlets on the wings for Wolves. Also 25 and also Portuguese he netted nine goals and grabbed 12 assists.

Leeds would be wise to pursue Cavaleiro too.

Having started just six games last season he is almost certainly likely to be available and Wolves should be willing to do a deal.

Cavaleiro is paid £27k-a-week. With Leeds looking to trim the budget after failing to win promotion, a loan deal would probably be more ideal. Wolves paid £7 million for the winger two seasons ago, so they may want to recoup a large chunk of that.

If Leeds can reignite the lethal duo of Costa and Cavaleiro next season, the Derby play-off disaster will soon become nothing more than a distant memory.
