Leeds United fans react as Pontus Jansson makes error in play-off tie

When Leeds United let Pontus Jansson go last summer there was disbelief among some quarters of the Elland Road fanbase.

The Swedish defender had become a cult hero in West Yorkshire for his performances on the pitch and larger than life personality off of it.

However, he and Marcelo Bielsa never seemed to be on the same page. Last summer, with Leeds looking to bring in some extra funds and balance the books, the Argentine sanctioned his move to Championship rivals Brentford.

Leeds ended up signing little-known Brighton centre-back Ben White on loan as his replacement and the young Englishman has gone on to become a far more successful replacement than any Leeds fans would have expected.

However, Jansson has had a fairly decent season himself.

The Swede has captained Brentford to a Championship promotion battle and for a brief period, it seemed the Bees looked like catching Leeds and West Brom in the automatic promotion spot.

However, they came up short and are now battling for promotion via the dreaded play-offs.

Last season, Jansson was left distraught and alone on the Elland Road pitch after Leeds were dumped out by Derby County.

His error almost cost his new side similarly.

With Brentford 3-0 up, 3-1 on aggregate, and cruising, Jansson inexplicably decided to try a backheel clearance which allowed Rhian Brewster to lob David Raya and make it a tense final 15 minutes.

However, Brentford held on and will now face Fulham or Cardiff City at Wembley.

But Leeds fans were quick to react to the moment, suggesting that this proved another exhibit in the evidence file that suggests Bielsa made the right call with the divisive Swede.
