Leeds United fans rave about Alfie McCalmont’s U23 display

A number of Leeds United fans have been left drooling over Alfie McCalmont’s performance during the Whites’ stunning under-23 win over Hull City on Sunday.

Carlos Corberan’s men were outstanding against the Tigers at Thorp Arch. They won 5-0 with Ryan Edmondson bagging a brace, while Jack Jenkins and Liam McCarron also got on the scoresheet.

McCalmont was the player to round off the scoring during the latter stages. And it was arguably a goal that the Northern Irishman thoroughly deserved after a fine performance.

The 19-year-old played a key role in the opening goal. His cross-field pass found its way perfectly into the path of Niall Huggins, before the wide-man cut the ball back for Jenkins.

It was a moment that may have reminded Leeds fans of the kind of passes Kalvin Phillips often plays for the first-team.

And his goal was another moment of superb quality. McCalmont played a brilliant one-two on the edge of the box before using some quick feet to create an opening. He then cooly slotted the ball home.

And McCalmont’s performance has definitely caught the eye on social media. Plenty of Leeds fans picked out the teenager’s display as the standout on a fantastic day for the Whites.

One supporter has even suggested that McCalmont looks to have more potential than Phillips did at the same age.

That may initially sound over the top given how important Phillips is to Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But given the time it took Phillips to find his spot in the side, that may actually be a statement that many others do agree with.

And it has been suggested that McCalmont deserves to be included in the matchday squad for Leeds’s trip to Arsenal for their FA Cup third round tie on Monday.

Here is what some of the supporters made of the midfielder’s performance…
