If Southampton value Che Adams at £20m, Leeds United should look elsewhere
Leeds United will go in search of automatic promotion this season and are currently nicely poised in the Championship.
The Whites are in second place and although they are on a mini-blip, they would have taken this position at this stage prior to the campaign.
New additions are needed during the transfer window for Marcelo Bielsa.
With the days ticking by, there are some nerves among the Leeds supporters that targets might not be obtained.
Leeds have been here before. Last season, a failure to add to their ranks in January sparked a slump which ultimately cost them automatic promotion.
Some news today has claimed that Southampton have rejected a third bid from Leeds for Che Adams
It is claimed that the loan offer included an agreement to make the move permanent for £20 million the summer.
If that future clause is what the Saints are pushing for then Leeds need to tell them thanks, but no thanks.
Adams signed for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team in the summer for £15 million after a blistering campaign for Birmingham.
He netted 22 goals for the Blues during 2018/19 and thoroughly deserved his switch to the Premier League.
This season, however, he has struggled to make an impact.
He is yet to score a single goal for the Saints in 21 outings although he has featured as a substitute more often than not.
Despite that, Leeds shouldn’t be prepared to pay an extra £5 million on his summer valuation.
Options
The Whites is an attractive proposition for players. The size of the club is enormous and Leeds shouldn’t let club’s hold them to ransom just because they know all about their desperate need for a striker.
Victor Orta is one of the best in the business when it comes to identifying players and his shortlist will be extensive.
Leeds fans will certainly expect a striker to come in before the window closes. What they won’t want to see, however, is the club overpay.
Signing Adams on loan and then paying £20 million in the summer doesn’t seem like great business given his 2019/20 form.
If they can’t get him at a more affordable rate then the club should switch their attention elsewhere.
