Robin Koch that he could imagine playing alongside Kalvin Phillips in midfield a little more often after glimpses of the pair in Leeds United’s recent games.
Koch has been able to showcase his versatility in the last couple of fixtures. With Kalvin Phillips injured, the Germany international has started in holding midfield against both Brighton and Spurs.
Phillips came on for the final moments against Tottenham. But rather than take Koch off, Marcelo Bielsa decided to introduce Phillips alongside him, with the England international taking on a more advanced role.
And while Koch suggested that his best role remains centre-back, he insisted that he could see himself forming a midfield partnership with Phillips.
“Of course,” , when asked about the possibility of playing alongside Phillips in midfield. “Normally you have to ask the gaffer this question, but I think Kalvin as a player is a little bit more offensive than me so with me maybe more playing a bit more defensively, I could imagine playing with Kalvin in the midfield.”
TBR View: Pairing is perfect when Leeds need to tighten up
The pair are yet to start together in midfield. But perhaps there is scope for Bielsa to turn to Koch and Phillips when Leeds need to see games out.
Phillips has the ability to play in that more advanced position. But Koch also showed against Spurs that he can make an impact further up the pitch, finding Raphinha in the build-up to Leeds’s third goal.
Leeds have tended to play a 4-1-4-1 under Bielsa. But it would not take much to switch to more of a 4-2-3-1 when the Whites do need to tighten up.
