Leeds simply have to join Rangers in reported hunt for Lewis Holtby
Leeds United are close to Premier League promotion but there will be a worry in the back of supporters’ minds. Do they have the depth, and calibre of player to keep them in the top tier?
Marcelo Bielsa has guided Leeds to third in the Championship, a point behind second-placed Sheffield United with eight league games to play. It is the closest Leeds have been in years to a return to the top tier.
Fans have been made to wait for 15 years, since the club were last in the Premier League. Now, Bielsa will be geeing his players up for a final push – but in the back of his mind, he knows work needs to be done this summer.
The Leeds squad boasts plenty of quality but the depth is nowhere near what it should be – especially to compete in the Premier League. Central midfield is an example of just that.

A player with Premier League experience, calibre and goals from midfield is just what Leeds need. It should convince Bielsa and director of football Victor Orta to rival Steven Gerrard and Rangers in pursuit of Lewis Holtby.
28-year-old Holtby is a target for the Teddy Bears. He is set to leave second-tier German outfit Hamburg, where his contract is set to expire. He has impressed all season, alongside Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Holtby has had a hand in nine goals in 24 league games. He has scored four times and created five more, proving he still has the ability to score from deep. He may no longer be the Tottenham prodigy, but he is still very good.
With 38 Premier League outings under his belt after a short stint at Fulham, too, Holtby would be an excellent addition on a free transfer – whether Leeds are promoted, or have to make do with another season in the second tier.
