Report: Leeds decline the chance to sign ex-Chelsea star Gary Cahill

Leeds United will turn down the chance to sign free agent Gary Cahill this summer,

The Whites are almost certain to be in the market for another central defender following their decision to sell Pontus Jansson to Brentford.

Cahill served Chelsea with distinction during his seven-year association with the club. He played 290 times for the Blues and famously won the Champions League in 2012.

The experienced performer won’t be rocking up at Elland Road, however. The newspaper report claims that the 33-year-old ex-England man ‘doesn’t fit the bill’ for the Whites.

Cahill’s last contract at Stamford Bridge was worth £100k-a-week,. Any potential move to Leeds would have seen him take a considerable pay cut.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has added Brighton youngster Ben White to his defensive ranks already this summer.

Cahill won’t be joining him though. Despite 61 England caps during a glittering career, Leeds will now turn their attention elsewhere.

TBR Verdict

Declining the chance to sign Cahill looks sensible from a Leeds point of view.

Failing to reach the Premier League last season might have hit the Whites in the pocket and not forking out for Cahill looks wise.

Liam Cooper and Ben White look like it could be a decent partnership on paper and perhaps Bielsa will just look to add some backup.

The former England man will need to considerably lower his previous wage demands if he is to earn another contract anywhere else.

Cahill barely played for Chelsea last season and it remains to be seen where he will play his football during 2019/20.
