Leeds have another exciting 20-year-old alongside Wilfried Gnonto that fans will be buzzing about

Leeds United are currently in a rich vein of form, firmly in contention for the Championship’s top two and in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Admittedly, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Daniel Farke‘s Whites in Tuesday night’s fourth-round replay, not in the opening 90 minutes anyway.

However, Leeds made the most of a tiring Plymouth Argyle to score three goals in extra time and progress thanks to a 4-1 win.

In that match, Farke opted to give Mateo Joseph his first Leeds start in over a year, and the 20-year-old certainly did not disappoint.

As per , Joseph’s start against the Pilgrims was his first for Leeds in 454 days.

This was longest gap between a player’s first two starts without leaving Leeds since Aaron Lennon’s 459-day gap between September 2003 and December 2004.

In the first half, Joseph latched onto a good ball into the box, beat his marker and shot at goal, Conor Hazard pushing the effort onto the woodwork.

And in the 55th minute of the game, the Leeds gem turned before seeing his low effort take a slight deflection to go just wide of the post.

Graham Smyth of the gave Joseph an 8 out of 10 rating, writing: “Put himself about, showed a good physical presence, held the ball up and threatened. Unlucky not to hit the net.”

While Wilfried Gnonto is currently the 20-year-old Leeds player with the highest profile, Joseph also looks like he has a bright future at Elland Road.

In January, he committed his future to Leeds until the summer of 2028, and Farke clearly rates him highly.

Over the past few weeks, Joseph has made numerous matchday squads and has come off the bench several times. Now, he’s got his first start in 454 days under his belt.

Quite a few Leeds fans were to see Joseph starting on Tuesday night and no doubt plenty more will be buzzing should he get more and more game time in the coming months and beyond.
