Leeds fans react to James Tarkowski challenge on Richarlison
A number of Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to comment on a challenge from James Tarkowski on Everton forward Richarlison on Monday night – with many left somewhat baffled.
The Whites’ latest game was overshadowed by the horrific injury suffered by Harvey Elliott.
It came after a challenge from Pascal Struijk. Struijk was sent off. And some clearly think that that was the right decision.
However, many have been critical. Elliott himself has insisted that the 22-year-old should not have been sent off. The Liverpool starlet noted that it was a terrible accident.
Struijk clearly had no intention of hurting Elliott. It does seem that he has potentially been a little clumsy leaving the ground to try and hook the ball away from the opponent.
It remains to be seen if Leeds appeal the decision. Some will certainly think that they have the grounds to do so.
And, for many fans, their case has probably just got a lot stronger.
Challenge divides opinion
One day later, Everton met Burnley at Goodison Park. And five minutes into the second-half, Tarkowski brought Richarlison down with a full-blooded challenge.
Tarkowski absolutely wins the ball. However, many cannot believe that the referee did not send the centre-back off. In fact, he did not even give a free-kick.
Tarkowski could arguably be deemed to be out of control. He leaves the ground and he moves across at some speed, leaving Richarlison with little place to go.
Admittedly, plenty of Leeds fans have applauded the challenge. Their problem is with Struijk seeing red.
But others have slammed the lack of consistency. One supporter suggested it was closer to the challenge that saw Liam Cooper sent off at Manchester City last season.
On that occasion, Cooper won the ball. But he was out of control and well off the ground.

Tarkowski gets the ball, yes, but the studs showing momentum takes Richarlson out. Worse than Pascal’s challenge, as the Burnley players studs are showing. Now someone please tell me, how he hasn’t got a yellow, when Pascal gets red?

Burnley constantly testing the boundaries of hard but fair and trying to “do” a player. This and the Brownhill one are bad in real time let alone slow motion, not even fouls…..

My point exactly. Struijk gets a red, but Burnley finish the game with 11 players every week. This is the wrong universe for that to make sense.
