Leeds fans react on Twitter to Ian Poveda’s moment of magic for under-23s

A number of Leeds United fans have been lauding Ian Poveda on Twitter after the January signing produced a moment of brilliance in the Whites’ latest under-23 game on Monday.

Poveda has endured a frustrating time since moving to Elland Road earlier in the year. While he was always going to struggle to displace Jack Harrison or Helder Costa, it will have surprised many that he is still awaiting the chance to make his first-team debut.

And what has been particularly concerning has been his absence from Marcelo Bielsa’s bench in recent games. He has often been left out for Jordan Stevens, but was still not involved on Saturday when Stevens was ill.

But he appears to have taken his opportunity to prove a point to Bielsa on Monday.

He was named in Carlos Corberan’s side for their clash with Barnsley. And he made an impressive impact in tough conditions.

It was his assist that led to Leeds’ goal in the 1-1 draw. And it was a piece of sheer magic from the former Manchester City man.

He produced a remarkable turn inside his own half to get away from the Barnsley midfielders. And after offloading the ball and heading down the right flank, he played the cross in for Bobby Kamwa after getting the ball back.

It was definitely a reminder of why Poveda has been on the books of some incredible clubs already in his short career. And it prompted a number of fans to implore Bielsa to bring him back into the squad this weekend when Leeds face Cardiff.

One fan even compared the 20-year-old to Dan James following the stunning goal. There is surely no question that Poveda is knocking on the door as he looks to make his debut for Leeds.
