Leeds fans react as Alfie McCalmont scores first professional goals on loan at Oldham

Alfie McCalmont scored his first professional goals on Tuesday night as loan side Oldham Athletic secured an impressive 3-1 away win over Bradford City – and Leeds United supporters have responded on Twitter.

McCalmont, 20, is one of a number of youngsters that left Leeds on loan in the summer – along with Bryce Hosannah, Robbie Gotts, Jordan Stevens, Ryan Edmondson and Mateusz Bogusz following promotion.

One-time Northern Ireland international McCalmont’s development at Leeds had stuttered somewhat and he chose to join Harry Kewell’s Oldham on loan – and he has already clocked up six appearances for the League Two side.

On Tuesday night, he started against Bradford – who rested Hosannah but played ex-Leeds defender Paudie O’Connor. With the scoreline reading 1-1 in the last 10 minutes, McCalmont popped up with a late brace.

His first came after breaking into the penalty area and finding the top corner with the outside of his foot, while his second came in the 93rd minute as Bradford searched for an equaliser. He side-footed home, after a good pass.

Leeds fans caught wind of the news that McCalmont had scored his first professional goal, and then immediately doubled his tally for Kewell’s side. Many applauded their young midfielder, and some discussed his future.
