Leeds fans react as Alex Mowatt scores stunning goal for West Brom on Tuesday
Alex Mowatt is renowned for his long-range shooting ability and on Tuesday night, he provided another example. The new West Bromwich Albion star has proved to be one of the signings of the window. His goal against Cardiff caught the attention of Leeds fans, who want him back.
Last season, 26-year-old Mowatt starred under new Baggies gaffer Valerian Ismael at Oakwell. He captained the Tykes into the Championship play-offs, having a hand in 15 goals during 44 games – scoring eight and creating seven. Barnsley failed to go up, and Mowatt left Oakwell on a free transfer.
He followed Ismael to West Brom, who had just been relegated from the Premier League. He has since been a crucial part of the Baggies side, playing every single minute of their 10 Championship matches. In that time, the left-footed midfielder has netted three goals – and one assist.
The Baggies sit top of the Championship table, winning six of their 10 league games – and drawing the remaining four. While he has never played in the Premier League, Mowatt is clearly showing top-tier form. On Tuesday, he provided another reason why he deserves to be playing a division above.
Despite being away from home, West Brom smashed Cardiff City 4-0. Mowatt was central to the win, lashing home a volley from all of 25 yards after a cross was headed out of the Bluebirds box. A piledriver of a shot, Mowatt put top spin on an effort that flew into the top corner.

What are Leeds fans saying about Mowatt, after his West Brom goal?
Of course, Mowatt is well-known to Leeds fans. He came through the Leeds academy alongside the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Charlie Taylor, Sam Byram and Lewis Cook – under the guidance of Neil Redfearn. Breaking into the senior side, he scored 13 and created 13 more in 125 Leeds games.
Many Leeds fans will remember his goal against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, in which he knuckle-balled an effort into the top corner. He is well-known for his long-range shooting, his goals, his assists and his ability from set-pieces. Perhaps, it is just what Leeds need in the Premier League.
Leeds needed a midfielder in the summer. The club were strongly linked with numerous players, such as Nahitan Nandez and others. Huddersfield ace Lewis O’Brien was the subject of a £13million offer from Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But Leeds failed to get him, or bring in another midfielder.
Now, Leeds lack cover in the middle of the park. Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts have been used at times – though naturally, both are strikers. Stuart Dallas is also an option in the middle of the park, but his form has dipped and he is naturally a winger, or a left-back. Mateusz Klich is far from his best.
Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to Mowatt’s goal – with the club still in need of a midfielder. Many believe that now, he is good enough for the Yorkshire side and perhaps the kind of player they should have signed in the summer. that Mowatt has the same agent as Ronaldo Vieira.
