Leeds fans have applauded Alex Mowatt for earning place in League One TOTY

Alex Mowatt was selected in the League One Team of the Year after an excellent campaign with Barnsley – and Leeds United fans have applauded their former player.

The 24-year-old has started every single League One match for the Tykes this season. Scoring five goals, he has also created six more in assists.

Barnsley are enjoying a 19-match unbeaten run and Mowatt has been central to that. Daniel Stendel’s side have won 12 of those matches, and conceded just nine goals. It has seen Barnsley climb into a lofty second place.

With promotion a real possibility for Mowatt and Barnsley, the former Leeds ace was named alongside Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady, Doncaster Rovers goal machine John Marquis and Luton’s James Justin in the Team of the Year.

Renowned for his long-range shooting ability, Mowatt has provided a source of creativity in the Barnsley side. He could well be facing Leeds in the Championship next season – if the Whites fail to gain a place in the Premier League.

Leeds United fans reacted to the news that former player Mowatt had been picked in the team of the season, with many delighted to see the Thorp Arch academy product impressing. Some even suggested an Elland Road return.
