Leeds fans drool over Alfie McCalmont as midfielder shines for Under-23 side

Alfie McCalmont starred for Leeds United’s Under-23 side on Monday night as the Whites beat Wigan Athletic 2-0 away from home at the DW Stadium – and Leeds fans raved over the Northern Ireland midfielder on Twitter.

McCalmont, 19, has broken through the ranks at Leeds this season and was handed his debut by Marcelo Bielsa in the Carabao Cup against Salford City earlier this season. He also played in the defeat to Stoke City in the same competition.

Not only has the central midfielder been impressing at Leeds, but he has also been earning rave reviews with his country. Indeed, McCalmont already has six Under-21 caps for Northern Ireland, and has been training with the senior side.

He started in the middle of the park for Leeds on Monday night as Carlos Corberan used a 3-5-2 system, which saw Jamie Shackleton and Leif Davis play as wing-backs. Illan Meslier played in goal, but it was McCalmont that shone.

McCalmont laid on assists for both goals, firstly winning the ball back deep in the Wigan half and threading Ryan Edmondson through who tucked home neatly. But his second assist was stunning, as he played in Jordan Stevens to make it two.

Leeds have plenty of competition ahead of McCalmont, who prefers to play slightly deeper in midfield. The likes of Kalvin Phillips, Adam Forshaw, Matuesz Klich and Shackleton are all ahead of the teenage ace.

But Leeds fans have predicted a run in the first team in the near future for McCalmont after his stunning display in the Professional Development League.
