Leeds duo Kalvin Phillips and Malik Wilks applaud Alex Mowatt

Kalvin Phillips and Malik Wilks have sent praise to former Leeds midfielder Alex Mowatt on Instagram, after the left-footed star scored for Barnsley.

Mowatt, 24, was named in the League One Team of the Season earlier this week after a superb campaign for Daniel Stendel’s side. The playmaker has pushed the Tykes in with a shout of automatic promotion.

Barnsley’s excellent unbeaten run has seen German boss Stendel deliver 20 games without defeat. Mowatt himself, has scored six goals and created eight more from central midfield.

Winger Wilks has also been shining in League One. On loan at Doncaster, Wilks has scored 14 goals. The Leeds winger and Phillips were full of praise on Instagram, replying to Mowatt’s Instagram post.

TBR’s view

Mowatt has been one of the best midfielders in the third tier this season. Certainly, he is showing the kind of quality on a consistent basis that we only saw in glimpses at Elland Road.

Remembered for his long-range shooting ability, Mowatt has added a creativity and a maturity to his style of play.

Did Leeds allow Mowatt to leave too soon? The Post claim he left Leeds for just £600,000. If anything, the midfielder left Leeds for a fee far too small. Would he improve Marcelo Bielsa’s side? Perhaps, but Leeds certainly have better options.
