Leeds defeat to Charlton compounded by Izzy Brown masterclass
Victor Orta is a popular figure among Leeds United fans and he has certainly brought in a number of excellent players over the last few seasons. But the decision to sign Izzy Brown from Chelsea on loan was a complete disaster.
Brown, 22, was signed on loan for the 2018-19 campaign. He was nursing an anterior cruciate ligament problem, and was expected to return before Christmas. He struggled to do so, and managed two substitute appearances throughout the term.
Even when fit, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa opted against using him. The Argentine did not think he was good enough, and instead he warmed the bench towards the end of the campaign.
Now, the former England youth international is on loan at Championship newcomers Luton Town. The newly-promoted side are coping so far, picking up 10 points from nine league games and sitting in a safe, but concerning 17th place.
Leeds struggled, meanwhile, on Saturday. A lack of creativity, as well as the inability to put away chances when the Whites finally did get an opportunity, saw Lee Bowyer’s Charlton nick all three points at The Valley.
That frustration would have been compounded when seeing how Brown did for Luton. Indeed, the Chelsea loanee was the best player on the pitch at Ewood Park, as Luton upset the apple cart to beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 away from home.
It was only Brown’s third Championship start of the campaign for Luton, but he was excellent. His first involvement saw him skip past Lewis Travis and chip a delightful cross – that target man James Collins gobbled up from close range.
Travis made amends with a strike from the edge of the box, but Brown was on hand to restore Luton’s lead and snatch all three points. Standing over a free-kick, Brown curled a wonderful ball in – and Matty Pearson powered home a header.
Pearson took the headlines as he netted the winner against his former side, but it was Brown that won Luton the match. With Leeds failing to score against Charlton, fans’ misery will be even worse as Brown shines for Luton.
