Leeds chief Radrizzani says Derby did something worse than Spygate last season
Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani has launched a scathing attack on Derby County,
They the supremo’s comments from the FT’s Business in Football summit, in which he said Derby selling their stadium to their own owner is worse than the spying that caused such debate earlier this season.
He : “The rules should be revised if clubs allowed to sell stadium to sister companies. We should revisit those rules. We were judged as a cheating club when we sent a scout to watch training.
“So they should take a similar view on what I would say is greater cheating, by these clubs. I wish that the executives in the FA and the EFL can shake this system to find a way to make the rules clear and the same for everyone.”
There might have been a hope that the feud between Leeds and Derby could have been put to rest after their play-off semi-final meeting, but Radrizzani’s comments – and Frank Lampard’s over-exuberant celebrations – look to have put paid to that.
It does say something about the odd moral code in English football that the ‘Spygate’ scandal caused such a fuss, when the process which creates a far greater and more sustainable advantage is ignored – probably because it isn’t juicy enough.
There is a tendency for these concerns to be written off as bitterness because they are usually aimed from teams who have not been at promoted towards those who can.
But that’s the flawed nature of the FFP sanctions – they only seem to impact teams who stay down. This one could run and run…
