Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has claimed that he thought Brenden Aaronson was ‘in over his head’ when he saw him for the first time at RB Salzburg.
The Whites were heavily linked with a move for the talented American for months. They finally got a deal over the line for a fee of £24.7 million this summer (), and he really is a fantastic signing.

Jesse Marsch decided to bring in two of his countrymen – Tyler Adams and Aaronson – to strengthen his squad after realising that Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips would be leaving the club.
The Whites boss knows both players really well having worked with them in the past. Aaronson, in particular, is someone who really impressed Marsch, but only after he made the manager think he was ‘in over his head’.
Speaking about Aaronson, Marsch told : “I said to Brenden, when he came to Salzburg [at 19 from the Philadelphia Union], in the first few training sessions I thought, Brenden’s in over his head, this might take a while.
“But I invested in him with video and had a lot of conversations and kept putting him in good training environments.
“And within three weeks he was one of the best players on the team. I mean, that is incredibly unique, but it says everything about Brenden.”

Aaronson has only played one Premier League game so far, but everyone at Leeds United is raving about him already.
The 21-year-old was really impressive against Wolves last weekend. His skills on the ball are fantastic, his passing is really good and he showed that he can score goals as well.
Ian Wright claimed that Aaronson ‘encompasses everything’ that Leeds United are about, while Mich Richards named him as one of the players to watch in the Premier League this season.
Leeds take on Southampton this afternoon and if Aaronson has a good game, the Whites should be able to get all three points without too much trouble.
