Leeds attacker Kemar Roofe can thrive in a deeper role if given time
Leeds United secured a home victory against Swansea City on Wednesday night in the league, which saw them move back to the top of the Championship table.
The Whites leapfrogged Norwich City to the summit and remain firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion this campaign.
Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison were on the scoresheet for the hosts at Elland Road, while a late Oliver McBurnie penalty set up a nervous finish.
Leeds could have been out of sight if they had put their chances away and it was an interesting night for Kemar Roofe.
The 26-year-old dropped back into an attacking midfield role, which allowed Patrick Bamford to spearhead the attack at striker.
It certainly makes sense to try fit two natural goalscorers in their team and manager Marcelo Bielsa may have found the best solution from now until the end of the season.
Bamford has proven in his career he can be clinical as a centre-forward and his return from injury is a major boost.
Meanwhile, Roofe has scored 14 goals this season in all competitions and thrived at striker, but he’s got the qualities to succeed in a deeper role too.
The Englishman provided great energy and creativity in the win over Norwich, but unfortunately for him he was wasteful on the night in front of goal.
Roofe missed a couple of good opportunities to score, but most importantly he was still getting into dangerous positions and a new role shouldn’t take away his goal threat.
His driving runs forward from deeper to support Bamford proved extremely effective and it gives Leeds an extra attacking threat with Bielsa’s new selection.
