Leeds United have reportedly decided against signing Liverpool playmaker Harry Wilson this summer, with the Reds requesting a hefty figure. The Athletic state that Leeds had been interested in the Wales midfielder, but that Liverpool were requesting £17million –
Wilson, 24, made the surprise move to Cardiff City last summer. He had just starred for Bournemouth in the Premier League during a loan spell, but he then went down a division to play for Cardiff. However, his form was continually brilliant – having a hand in 19 goals during his 37 games.
But he returns to Liverpool with his future still in doubt. He has now been on loan five times, including excellent spells at Hull City and Derby County. This summer, amid his participation at Euro 2020, he needs to find himself a permanent home and Leeds were keen – but chosen not to sign him.
Is Liverpool asking price of £17million too expensive for Leeds target Wilson?
Firstly, Leeds need a midfielder with attacking qualities. Tyler Roberts has been inconsistent, Rodrigo has been in and out of the side with injury – both are naturally strikers. Leeds know they need a player alongside Stuart Dallas in the middle of the park – having tried to sign Rodrigo De Paul.
So, Leeds need a player like Wilson. He can do a job out wide too, and is a set-piece specialist. An international, proven in the Premier League, and still only 24. He would also add to the homegrown quota. Why have Leeds chosen not to spend the same fee that it cost them to get Raphinha?
It is puzzling. On paper, he seems the ideal Marcelo Bielsa player in that position. Already a teammate of Roberts, he would be perfect for Leeds and if he gains momentum and improves – like many do under Bielsa – his resale value will grow. Leeds are making a mistake, if they ignore Wilson.
