Report: Leeds actually agreed deal to smash their transfer record this summer but were pipped at the last minute
Leeds United enjoyed a busy old summer as Jesse Marsch brought in a number of new faces to replace the outgoing Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips.
The Whites were powerless to resist huge offers for their star men and in the end had to sell. However, Victor Orta worked hard to sign new players and spent big on the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra, and Tyler Adams to name but three.
However, according to , Leeds might have spent even more. It’s reported that the Whites had looked to sign Charles de Ketelaere from Club Brugge and had indeed agreed a club record fee of around £34m for the striker. Of course, AC Milan came in and snatched him from under Leeds’ noses. But prior to that, the Whites thought they had got their man.
Had De Ketelaere signed for that figure he’d have been a club-record signing. Per , that currently stands with new signing Aaronson, whose £29m+ fee eclipsed the sums paid for the likes of Rodrigo and Daniel James.
In the end, Leeds signed Wilfried Gnonto right at the end of the window to at least give Jesse Marsch that extra attacking option.
TBR’s View: Leeds Might Go Again In January
The new signings already look like they are bedding in nicely at Elland Road but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Leeds go once more in January to add a quality forward.
Of course, a lot will depend on how Gnonto adapts and the amount of game time he gets. But if Leeds are flying and have a chance of pushing for the Europa League places, then Orta might well give Marsch more money to make that dream become a reality.
There is a long way to go. But Leeds have started well and, so far, the signings Marsch has made look like quality acquisitions.
