Leeds 21-year-old can replicate Pascal Struijk next season at Elland Road – TBR View

If you asked Pascal Struijk at the beginning of the season how much he would play at Leeds United this year, his answer surely would have been very little.

However, the colossus ace has ended up playing 22 first-team games so far across all competitions this campaign, and has barely put a foot wrong for most of that.

Struijk, 21, is a versatile youngster who can play in the midfield, but is a natural centre-back that has looked more comfortable when playing in the heart of defence this season.

The left-footer offers a superb balance to the defence, and is a natural replacement for club captain Liam Cooper whenever he’s missing.

Struijk has been that one young player to come out of nowhere at Elland Road to turn out to be a really important part of the senior squad.

Leeds may already own someone who can replicate that next season.

Alfie McCalmont, who is from the Whites academy, is a rising talent that can perhaps following in Struik’s footsteps next year by making a major first-team breakthrough in the top division.

The 21-year-old is an all-action central midfielder that looks like he’s got a massive future ahead of him.

He’s been around the first-team squad before and made two senior appearances for the Yorkshire giants, but the club decided to send him out on loan last summer.

The Northern Irish youngster has scored nine goals in 34 games across all competitions so far this season for League Two club Oldham Athletic.

He may be playing further down the football ladder, but he’s been earning rave reviews.

The relentless ace has the versatility to play several midfield positions, something which would help his cause at Elland Road, and perhaps he could be given a few opportunities under manager Marcelo Bielsa because he has the right fit profile.
