Lee Johnson says Sunderland have an ‘exciting’ player who makes ‘your pupils dilate’
Sunderland manager Lee Johnson has waxed lyrical about Black Cats winger Aiden McGeady, describing him as an “exciting” player.
McGeady was frozen out under the previous Sunderland boss, even going out on loan, and it looked as though he had no future at the Stadium of Light.
However, Johnson has reintegrated the 35-year-old in the starting XI, and has been rewarded with four goals and 12 assists.
McGeady’s efforts have been crucial in Sunderland’s surge up the League One table, and ahead of Saturday’s home game with Charlton, they sit third in the table.
Not only that, but the Black Cats are just two points behind second-placed Peterborough and five behind leaders Hull, with games in hand on both the top two.
“Aiden would be in my team of the year, that’s for sure, if I was picking one,” Johnson told the . “But then so would quite a few of our boys, if I’m honest.
“He’s an exciting player, isn’t he? When he’s fed in that little half-space position, and can face somebody up, you can feel your whole body lift up.
“Your eyes widen, your pupils dilate and you’re thinking, ‘Right, go on then, I’m looking forward to seeing the result of this’.”

To think that McGeady could no longer be on Sunderland’s books had things gone just a bit differently.
Good job that’s not been the case, with Johnson’s arrival proving the catalyst for a run of form which puts the Black Cats in a great position to earn promotion this season.
McGeady’s return to the squad has proven crucial, the veteran forming a superb attacking partnership with Charlie Wyke and the two often combining for goals.
