Lee Johnson praises Leeds United talent Jamie Shackleton

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson is not exactly popular among the Leeds United fanbase. It appears to stem from his comments regarding the Spygate saga last season and simply put, Leeds fans are generally not Lee Johnson fans.

Regardless, he was more than happy to lavish praise on one member of the Leeds United playing squad.

Jamie Shackleton has not had the best of seasons at Leeds. Despite looking like a breakout talent toward the end of the 2018-19 season the youngster has had injury trouble plaguing him this campaign. Now he is back fit, the 20-year-old is struggling to find his way back into the Leeds United XI.

But the Bristol City boss is a huge fan. Johnson was discussing the difficulty of young talent to find their way into the Robins first-team, and highlighted Shackleton’s struggles at Leeds as an example.

“I don’t like to name names because we’ve got a lot of good players in the academy. That production line is very important – but also it should be difficult to get in Bristol City’s team.

“It’s the same at West Brom and Leeds. Look at Shackleton at Leeds. A very good player – can’t get in. Can’t get in because Leeds are flying and probably going to the Premier League.”

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is known to be a huge admirer of Shackleton’s talents so hopefully, in the long-term, the youngster will find himself in the first-team picture at Elland Road.

For now, he needs to remain patient and will hopefully find his way into the Leeds United first-team again soon.
