Leandro Trossard’s Dad criticises Belgium boss after Arsenal winger’s poor start at Euro 2024

Having endured a difficult opening game to Euro 2024 with Belgium, Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard was dropped in Saturday’s win against Romania.

Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco dropped Trossard in favour of Sevilla’s Dodi Lukebakio, who started on the right.

And even when Trossard was introduced in the 56th minute, he struggled to look anything like the player who has been excelling for Mikel Arteta.

For Arsenal this season, Trossard scored 17 goals in all competitions, explaining why he was able to push Gabriel Martinelli out of the starting XI.

However, that form simply hasn’t been replicated for his country at Euro 2024, despite Trossard’s scoring for Belgium leading up to the tournament.

The 29-year-old scored against both Montenegro and Luxembourg in the final two warm-up games, potency that hasn’t been continued.

That being said, Trossard’s father has now taken umbrage with Tedesco, blaming Belgium’s manager for his son’s struggles at the tournament.

Leandro Trossard’s Dad says Belgium manager is at fault for his poor form at Euros

Pierre Trossard was speaking to before Belgium’s game kicked off against Romania on Saturday, perhaps knowing that his son would be dropped.

And Trossard senior seemed adamant that Tedesco was to blame, then claiming that he wasn’t a good fit for the national team.

He said: “Leandro is criticised, but he was moved from one position to another, it’s difficult to keep a guideline in your game in these conditions.

“I don’t think Tedesco is a good coach for Belgium, even if he doesn’t have the stubbornness of Roberto Martínez.”

Of course, given his strong end to the season at Arsenal, many did feel that Trossard would be a key performer in Germany.

But having replaced Trossard with Lukebakio as mentioned, Tedesco was able to place Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku at left-wing, his preferred position.

Arsenal interested in Euro 2024 pair Xavi Simons and Nico Williams

It would be harsh to suggest that dropping Trossard was the catalyst for the 2-0 win and Belgium’s fast start, but Tedesco will feel justified in his decision, especially given Trossard’s poor substitute performance.

Interestingly, Trossard’s struggles come at a time when Arsenal are being extensively linked with a couple of exciting wingers.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Xavi Simons and Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams are both firmly on the radar if reports are to be believed.

And perhaps fortunately for Arsenal, Simons has just told PSG he plans to leave the club after Euro 2024 concludes.
