Lawrenson predicts Wolves vs Arsenal result; slams Gunners’ January

Mark Lawrenson that Arsenal had an awful January, and believes that they will fall to another defeat when they face Wolves on Thursday.

The Gunners went into the new year in a brilliant position. Mikel Arteta’s men won five in a row in all competitions to put themselves in a fantastic spot in the top-four race in the Premier League.

However, January proved to be a huge disappointment. Arsenal failed to win a single game, were knocked out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and did not score in any of their last four.

The window shut without the Gunners making any marquee signings. And next up, they face a Wolves side who have gone almost two months without a Premier League defeat.

Bruno Lage’s side are sat eighth in the table. And they are only four points back of fourth place Manchester United, with a game in hand.

And Lawrenson has backed Wolves to inflict another setback upon Arsenal when they meet on Thursday.

“Arsenal had an awful January, failing to win in the league and tumbling out of both domestic cups,” , as he predicted a 2-0 Wolves win.

“Bruno Lage’s side are very good defensively and that means they can put in a pretty average performance going forward but still have a chance of winning games because they are so solid.

“They have conceded only 16 in 21 league games so far and I don’t think Arsenal will break them down either.”

Arteta has plenty to prove after ‘awful’ January for Arsenal as Wolves challenge looms

Arteta silenced a lot of his doubters in the months following the opening weeks of the season. However, those doubters are starting to get a little louder after their poor January.

On the pitch, they struggled. And, surprisingly, they failed to significantly strengthen in the market. That has surely left Arteta with a huge challenge to secure a top four spot.

Losing to a side like Wolves would be an ominous sign. They are potential rivals for those European spots. They also meet at the Emirates later in the month.

Arteta has taken a gamble over the last few weeks. A poor result later this week would be an extremely worrying sign for many associated with the Gunners.
