Lawrence Shankland shows Sunderland what they’re missing with four-goal league debut
Lawrence Shankland was a wanted man this summer. One team consistently linked with an interest in the player were League One giants Sunderland.
, the Black Cats had reportedly offered a contract to the talented striker this summer.
However, there was plenty of interest from elsewhere in the young striker’s services. The reason why was clear. Shankland had been a goal-machine with Ayr United in the previous campaign. The frontman scored 34 goals in 41 games for the Scottish Championship side in 2018-19.
In the end, with Sunderland under the shadow of an eventually failed takeover plot, Shankland remained in the Scottish Championship, joining Dundee United.
Yesterday, as Sunderland sputtered to a familiar feeling 1-1 draw in their League One opener with Oxford United, Shankland showed just what Sunderland are missing.
He scored all four goals on his league debut as The Terrors defeated Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4-1 on the opening day of the season.
Added to the two goals in his four Scottish League Cup appearances so far that is six goals in five games for his new club.
Sunderland fans were rightly doubtful that Shankland, who had previously worked with boss Jack Ross at St Mirren, could make the grade in England’s third-tier.
But judging by his start to the season, it would have been nice to see him get the chance.
