Lawrence Shankland could be the striker to guide Sunderland to promotion

Scottish goal scoring sensation Lawrence Shankland could be the man to guide Sunderland back to the Championship.

Sunderland have a decent young striker in Josh Maja but he needs competition up front.

Jerome Sinclair has shown glimpses but has not been consistent and Charlie Wyke’s injuries are getting concerning.

Jack Ross might choose to dip into the transfer market this January to ensure Sunderland have enough fire power to maintain their promotion bid.

And using his expert knowledge of the Scottish leagues, he could try to bring Shankland to the Stadium of Light.

The 23-year-old has been in prolific form this season, scoring 21 goals in just 19 games.

This comes after his tally of 29 goals in 33 games helped Ayr United win promotion from League One to the Scottish Championship last season.

And he has guided Ayr to the top of Scotland’s second tier after 12 league matches.

The former Queen’s Park and Aberdeen striker has a lot of potential and knows where the net is.

His overall tally of 50 goals in 52 games is scary, despite it being at a lower level.

Shankland’s natural goal scoring ability has caught the eye and he is surely worth a risk for Sunderland.

Considering he is young and in red hot form, signing the former Scotland under-21 international could be a stroke of genius from Ross.
