Of course, a free transfer for a 33-year-old would not normally be the kind of deal that would capture the imagination of supporters. But Perisic looks to have the potential to be an inspired addition for Tottenham.

He knows Antonio Conte extremely well from his time at Inter. And he is a serial winner. The wide-man has won league titles with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and the Nerazzurri. He lifted the Champions League with Bayern. And he reached the World Cup final in 2018.

Tottenham reportedly view Perisic as the perfect mentor for Ryan Sessegnon. But their rivals will be concerned about the impact he himself could make while in North London.

It certainly looks to be a real blow for Inter. Perisic sent an emotional message on social media following his departure from San Siro. He explained what a privilege it was to play for Inter. And he insisted that the club will keep a special place in his heart.

And amongst those to reply was Martinez, with the striker’s message translating as ‘What a player bear!! Good luck brother’.

Martinez reacts as Perisic joins Tottenham

Martinez’s response is somewhat significant because Tottenham reportedly also want the Argentinian this summer. Reports claim he is interested in moving to Spurs and being reunited with Conte.

Tottenham fans may take encouragement from Martinez lauding Perisic following his exit. But they may also hope that he decides to make the same move before the end of the summer transfer window.
