Kris Boyd unimpressed by Nikola Katic as Rangers draw with St Johnstone

Former Rangers star Kris Boyd tore into defender Nikola Katic for his performance in a 2-2 draw against St Johnstone yesterday.

Boyd made the comments in his role as a pundit for during their live coverage of the game.

The Croatian endured an afternoon to forget at McDiarmid Park and was at fault for St Johnstone’s first goal.

His form of late has been erratic at best from the youngster and Boyd didn’t hold back after the final whistle.

“Nothing will change my mind – it was the worst 90 minutes I’ve seen from a Rangers centre-half.

“Steven Gerrard sent George Edmundson out to warm up after 10 minutes. It’s schoolboy defending.

“For me, personally, I struggle to find a worse 90 minutes from a Rangers centre-half, I’m sorry, but from start to finish, it wasn’t good enough.

“We praise Rangers going forward, and rightly so, but defensively it was all over the place.”

Boyd’s passionate rant in the direction of Katic is perhaps a little bit over the top.

As poor as Katic has been of late he is still learning his trade in the men’s game and as a youngster, it’s to be expected, to a certain degree, that he will make mistakes.

Learning

Last season Joe Worrall came under-fire during his loan spell from Nottingham Forest. He has now played every minute of the 2019/20 campaign in a team chasing promotion to the Premier League.

Katic is more than capable of taking Worrall’s lead and playing himself out of his poor form too.

At 23, the defender isn’t going to be perfect but he must show a willingness to learn and eradicate his recent mistakes.

Boyd isn’t wrong to critique his performance but it’s important for Katic that he doesn’t pay a great deal of attention to it.

If anything, the youngster would be wise to use the ex-Rangers man’s words as motivation to kick on for the rest of the campaign.
