Kris Boyd has admitted that he views Rangers defenders Connor Goldson and Filip Helander as a potential weakness in the team.
Pundit Boyd has picked out the centre-back duo in the wake of their poor displays in the 2-2 draw against Feyenoord on Thursday night in the Europa League group stages.
Goldson is one ever-present in the team under manager Steven Gerrard, as he’s played every minute of the club’s league and Europa League campaign so far.
Meanwhile, summer addition Helander has started to force his way into the team on a more regular basis alongside him.
There is certainly a distinct lack of pace when the duo play together and there is a concern that better teams could punish them.
“I look at Gerrard’s side right now and see a group of boys who are all fighting for each other when it matters most. There are weaknesses there, let’s be honest,”
“I’m still not utterly convinced with Connor Goldson and Filip Helander as a partnership. They are vulnerable in my book and the channel between Goldson and James Tavernier in particular can be exploited.”
TBR’s View:
Goldson and Helander are both combative defenders that have proven their quality at times, but they should be nervously looking over their shoulders.
Gerrard does have competition in that area of the pitch and shouldn’t be afraid to make changes at times, especially with a busy fixture list in December on the horizon.
George Edmundson and Nikola Katic are two decent centre-backs that have to come into contention moving forward, as they do have the ability to improve the backline if they discover form.
