Kris Boyd has highlighted a weakness in Rangers defender Connor Goldson when it comes to overplaying at the back, but says he went back to basics in midweek with a commanding European display.
The English centre-back is a mainstay in Steven Gerrard’s team and has already played 47 games across all competitions this season.
He moved to Ibrox for £3million () from Brighton in the 2018 summer transfer window and has become an important player for the Scottish giants.
Goldson was part of a Gers side that won 1-0 away at Braga on Wednesday night to progress to the Europa League last 16, where they have been handed a tough draw against Bayer Leverkusen.
Boyd has explained that Goldson went back to his no-nonsense approach with his defending on the European stage.
The 27-year-old was a colossus in his penalty area against Braga and was a magnet for headed clearances.
“There weren’t many people who saw that defensive display coming in Portugal but Connor Goldson and George Edmundson were both outstanding,”
“The reason for that was they kept things simple. Goldson has been guilty of trying to overplay lately and show everyone he’s a good player. But what he’s good at is clearing any danger when it comes.”

TBR’s View:
Goldson is clearly a Rangers player that has earned a lot of trust from manager Gerrard and he has to be one of the first names on the team sheet.
He’s had a few displays this calendar year that have dipped below his standard and it’s true that he can make errors at times when in possession.
But he’s a warrior defender that is great in the air and his display alongside Edmundson is the type that Rangers are going to need again in Europe if they are going to cause an upset of knocking out Lervkusen over two legs.
