Klopp used to babysit Hummels, now he must eliminate him from the Champions League

Jurgen Klopp saw his Liverpool side see off their bitter rivals Manchester United yesterday before watching on as they were drawn against German champions Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League today.

The clash throws up all sorts of historic connections for Klopp; he used to enjoy ding-dong battles with the Bavarians during his time as Borussia Dortmund manager.

He also managed Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels during their time together in Dortmund, which saw them just come up short of Champions League glory in 2013; when Munich won out 2-1 at Wembley thanks to Arjen Robben’s winner.

But Klopp’s relationship with Hummels goes back beyond even that; , when the Liverpool boss was a player at Mainz, he used to babysit a young Hummels, when his parents were working.

Hermann Hummels, Mats’ father, was a coach at Mainz for a under a year and Klopp was called upon at times to carry out babysitting duties.

The pair went on to win two German titles together, but now find themselves as adversaries in search of a place in the last eight of the Champions League.

Given the two sides’ respective reasons so far, there is no reason Klopp can’t win out over the man he used to look after.
