Klopp admits Brewster has felt the intensity of Liverpool first-team pre-season
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed young striker Rhian Brewster has been ‘knocked down’ by his first pre-season with the first-team.
The teenage striker has been heavily involved with the Reds so far in their preparations for 2019/20.
He impressed by scoring four goals in his first three games, but has appeared slightly jaded in recent outings and was given less minutes against Sporting CP and Napoli.
It is thought that Brewster will be given a chance to make his mark with the first-team this season, with Daniel Sturridge having left the club.
Klopp has been keen to find out where Brewster is at in pre-season, and gave a positive assessment of the World Cup U17s winner – although he did admit he is somewhat tired from his exertions.
He said (): “He’s close but for him this was his first first-team pre-season. After a long injury, long, intense.
“It started really well then pre-season knocked him down, you really feel your legs, but we are super positive about him. No pressure.
“With the talent and attitude he has, it will be fine, but when I don’t know. In a lot of pre-season moments he looked really good. The future is bright.”
TBR’s view
It is hardly a surprise to hear Brewster is feeling the effects of pre-season.
He spent around a year on the sidelines after bad injuries to his ankle and knee from the same incident.
Klopp will need to make sure the youngster doesn’t do too much, as Roberto Firmino has just had a football-packed year and might take some time to get back up to speed – meaning Brewster could be needed.
