Kieron Dyer previously compared reported Newcastle United target John Stones to Titus Bramble

Newcastle United’s expected Saudi-backed takeover is set to see the Magpies very busy in the transfer market. Now, is suggesting that there may be a British feel to any recruitment the club undertake this summer.

The report claims that John Stones could be one of these targets for Newcastle. There are doubts over the players future at Manchester City. in March, City are open to selling him for a fee in the region of £50 million.

It would be a mixed move from Newcastle United fans, considering Stones ability but undoubted inconsistency.

In fact, that is perhaps best summed up by former Newcastle United midfielder Kieron Dyer’s assessment of Stones.

Dyer, who spent eight years at St James’ Park, compared Stones to former Newcastle and Ipswich team-mate Titus Bramble in an interview last month.

“Titus was a very good player. I look at John Stones today and I see a lot of Titus in him. There was a time when it seemed every time Titus made a mistake it led to a goal. It is just what happened.

“Then I look at John Stones and there was a time it was the same for him. Every time he slipped over, it’s a goal. Or one bad pass and it’s a goal.

“But Titus, like Stones was quick, strong, powerful, had two great feet, great tackler.”

Newcastle paid a £5 million to sign the then 20-year-old. At the time, Bramble was considered one of the top talents in English football and the late great Sir Bobby Robson had views of Bramble one day becoming a Toon and England hero.

Unfortunately, Bramble’s time at St James’ Park became synonymous with errors and injury and despite recovering to have a fairly decent five-year spell at the club he never achieved his potential.

Stones is indeed a similar type of player, not quite meeting the potential that many have suggested he possesses.

Newcastle United fans will no doubt be hoping that should Stones arrive on Tyneside, they can help him reach his best, unlike what happened with Bramble.
