Kieran Trippier’s free kick prowess adds extra dimension to Tottenham’s attacking arsenal
Kieran Trippier enjoyed a successful campaign for Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur last season, making the right-back position his own after Kyle Walker left to join Manchester City.
His successful outing for the North London club saw him named in Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad this summer, where the Three Lions made it to the semi-finals of the competition.
The 27-year-old was a stand out performer for Southgate’s team and became only the third Englishman ever to score a goal in a World Cup semi-final after he struck an exquisite free kick during the defeat to Croatia.
It was this very free kick that highlighted an attribute of Trippier’s game that had never been seen before – an attribute Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs could bring into their attacking arsenal for the 2018/19 Premier League season.
Trippier played his first game this past weekend since the World Cup in Russia and picked up from where he left off; scoring with a Beckham esque free-kick which is slowly becoming his trademark in Spurs’ 3-1 win over Fulham.
This made Trippier the first Tottenham player to score from a direct free-kick in the Premier League since Christian Eriksen in October 2015 v Swansea. A stat which only cements his status as the “Bury Beckham” even more.
Tottenham, however, could certainly use Trippier’s free-kick taking prowess to their advantage this season, and from a team that as heavily relied on talisman Harry Kane’s goals in recent campaigns, it’s the perfect extra weapon for Mauricio Pochettino to have at his disposal.
