Keep Tommy Elphick and three others
Since returning from his loan spell at Hull City, Tommy Elphick has impressed at centre-back. Smith rates Elphick more than Steve Bruce did and he provides defensive depth with Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause only on loan.
Glenn Whelan‘s recent form could have earned him a new deal. The Republic of Ireland international’s experience will also help Aston Villa’s younger players.
Young defenders Easah Suliman and Mitch Clark also deserve more time. Suliman, 21, has had a disappointing season after an unsuccessful loan stint in Holland but he is still highly rated. Clark, 20, has been impressive on loan at Port Vale.

It is time to part ways with veteran duo Mile Jedinak and Alan Hutton. Both players are past their best and Aston Villa need to trim their wage bill.
