In late December, claimed Mikel Arteta had Luiz on his radar ahead of the January transfer window opening.

And in late January the claimed Arsenal were expected to firm up their interest the final week of the transfer window.

In the end, Villa held firm and Luiz stayed put at the West Midlands club.

However, Arsenal will lose Mohamed Elneny in the summer as his contract will run out at the end of the season.

And Romano, speaking on the , claimed that Luiz’s name is still on the Gunners’ list.

However, Arsenal could have competition for the 23-year-old’s signature, added the transfer guru.

“Arsenal need a midfielder, they wanted a midfielder in January.

“Also because Elneny will leave the club so they need a player in that position.

“Douglas Luiz is one to watch in the summer.

“Not only for Arsenal, they have an interest, but it’s not only Arsenal.

“Because I’m not convinced he will extend his contract with Aston Villa.

“So he could be a big name on the market this summer, and so, keep an eye on Douglas Luiz.

“Not only for Arsenal, but they have his name on the list.”

Can Arsenal land “unbelievable” midfielder?

Luiz has been in fine form for Villa over the course of the last two seasons.

Since arriving at the club from Manchester City for around £15million, he has established himself as a consistently excellent performer.

Luiz helped Villa beat Arsenal 3-0 in November 2020 and Ian Wright admitted that the Brazilian “blasted” the Gunners.

“Someone like Douglas Luiz, he is ready to be one of the best midfield players in the Premier League,” Wright .

“He is so underrated. They blasted us. We had no chance. It was men against boys.”

And in June last year, former boss Dean Smith Luiz “unbelievable”.
