Karius’ shaky form during loan spell should make Liverpool cherish Alisson even more

Loris Karius’ struggles from last season at Liverpool have during his loan spell with Turkish outfit Besiktas,

Karius of course endured a nightmare Champions League final last season and could well have started the current season as Liverpool’s number one if Jurgen Klopp hadn’t spent big to bring Alisson to Anfield last summer.

In the aftermath of that, German Karius was sent on a two-year loan to Besiktas, presumably with the intention of rebuilding his form and confidence away from the glare of Anfield – but it isn’t working.

Karius’ current manager, Senol Gunes, : “Karius has gone a bit stagnant, something is wrong with his electricity, motivation, enthusiasm for the game.”

“It has been like that since the beginning. Something is wrong, he has also been unlucky. [He] is talented but it hasn’t worked out and we have a problem.”

It’s clear that the psychological scars of last May’s debacle are still on Karius’ mind – and that’s understandable.

That match in Kiev was the biggest of the German’s career; a night which will have started with him dreaming of getting his hands on the Champions League trophy.

It ended up with a humiliation on the most public scale imaginable; exacerbated by the relentless online trolls and frustrations of the Liverpool fans.

Karius may never recover and realise his true potential – but in the interim, the cut-throat world of Premier League football dictates that Klopp was right to let him leave rather than try and rebuild him in the middle of a title race.
