Karamoko Dembele sends telling message to 24-year-old Celtic player after what he did vs Dundee

Mikey Johnston’s double against Dundee is one the Celtic winger clearly loved. The 24-year-old’s future at the club has been under scrutiny this season after failing to make a material impact on the Hoops first team.

Injuries to Daizen Maeda and Liel Abada meant that there was a place up for grabs on the Celtic flank for one of the fringe players to grab an opportunity.

Brendan Rodgers has tried Hyunjun Yang, Mikey Johnston and Marco Tilio but, as yet, neither has given the Celtic manager a selection headache now that Maeda has returned to the fold.

However, Johnston got another opportunity to show what he could do yesterday after coming on to replace Luis Palma on the 81st minute and, my goodness, didn’t he just grab it.

A quickfire double put Celtic on easy street in the closing stages of the game and Johnston was, for once, being hailed as a hero amongst the Hoops support.

The Celtic winger took to to celebrate his goals with a simple message, “3 points, 2 goals, Merry Christmas.”

The post garnered a lot of attention from his teammates as the likes of Marco Tilio replied, “Cheers to that.” and Hyeongyu Oh said simply, “Santa.”. Rocco Vata said Johnston was “So good” but it was the reply of former Hoops winger Karamoko Dembele that caught my eye.

In a wordless response, Dembele simply put:

In a thinly veiled message (or is it a dig?) Dembele seems to be telling Johnston’s critics to be quiet after his goals yesterday.

Personally, I am delighted for Johnston. Getting those goals takes the pressure off the Republic of Ireland winger for now.

However, it should be mentioned that those goals are Johnston’s first in a Celtic jersey in over four years since he hit the back of the net against Ross County on the 1st of December 2019 in the Scottish Premiership. []

Will it be enough to help try and save his Celtic career or have the goals come too late? I fear it is the latter as the winger seems to be that player who can only make an impact off the bench.
