Kalvin Phillips is exactly what Newcastle need if they lose Longstaff
According to the , Newcastle United are keen on signing Kalvin Phillips. However, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the Leeds United midfielder and look to be winning the race to his signature.
However, the Magpies should not let Phillips slip through their fingers without a fight. The north east club are currently in turmoil, following the recent departures of manager Rafa Benitez and attacker Ayoze Perez. An exciting signing that makes a statement of intent is exactly what is called for. Phillips could be just the signing they need.

This would certainly be the case if Manchester United are able to prise Sean Longstaff away from St James’ Park this summer. According to the , the Red Devils are “on the verge” of signing the 21-year-old.
Longstaff’s exit would leave the Magpies in desperate need of a new midfielder. Phillips would bring tenacity, grit and work ethic to the middle of park for Newcastle. Having released Mo Diame earlier this summer, this is already something Newcastle need more of in their squad.
Phillips was sensational for Leeds last season. He was pivotal for Marcelo Bielsa’s side as the Whites came close to finally securing a return to the Premier League. Though Leeds ultimately fell short of promotion, Phillips showed that the belongs in the top flight.
Losing Longstaff would be a major blow for the St James’ Park faithful. The arrival of Phillips, though, would ease the loss and would represent the first step of the rebuilding journey that the Magpies are about to embark on.
