Stones, 27, has been stunning for club and country over the past 12 months – breaking back into Pep Guardiola’s side after a spell on the sidelines. The 49-time England international clocked up 35 appearances for City last term – helping the Premier League champions keep a whopping 22 clean sheets.

It is a real sign of intent from Manchester City – and a massive boost for Stones. The new deal is not just an extension for a year, or a three-year deal until he hits 30. It is a contract that keeps Stones at Manchester City until he is 32 – a deal that hands Stones a massive confidence boost going into 21-22.

A likable character within the England set-up, Stones has now firmly established himself as one of the first names on Southgate’s team sheet. With the World Cup next summer, he will be hoping for another solid season. Leeds ace Phillips, and ex-City man Delph both reacted.
