‘Just about the only one’: Some Leeds fans praise one player despite Southampton defeat
Leeds United fans weren’t impressed with their side’s defeat at Southampton today, but one player emerged with some credit.
Jamie Shackleton was very much his side’s best player as the Whites fell to a 1-0 defeat on the south coast.
The 22-year-old put in a decent display for Marcelo Bielsa’s charges, weighing in with multiple tackles and making several incerceptions.

Shackleton – playing at right wing-back – also sought to drive his side forward, completing three dribbles, and was tidy in possession.
Sadly, it wasn’t a good day at the office for a Leeds side missing several key players.
It could be argued that the Whites put in the worst display of the Bielsa era at St Mary’s.
Nonetheless, some of the Elland Road faithful found some solace in Shackleton’s good display.
Here is what some Leeds fans made of the youngster’s performance at Southampton:
Shackleton has impressed me, just about the only one

James and Shackleton today. Otherwise poor performance.
— Dan Owen (@MOT_DAN)
Shackleton only Leeds player that doesn’t deserve to be on the losing side
— Joe🇮🇨 (@lufcJoe_)
Only Shackleton can hold his head up after that
— Sean Sturman (@SaintSturman)
Shackleton was the best player on the pitch and that’s our worst performance under Bielsa.
— Micky P Kerr (@MickyPKerr)
Shackleton the only one who deserves a wage for that game
— SeanBird💙💛 (@delibirdyb)
Leeds were missing several key players for the game, including Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford.
They were second best for most of the match and only mustered three shots, none of which were on target.
Southampton, meanwhile, got their first Premier League victory of the season, courtesy of Armando Broja’s 53rd-minute winner.
The 20-year-old Chelsea loanee rifled home after being set up by Nathan Redmond at the end of a 53rd-minute counter-attack.
