Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool have an ‘unbelievable’ player in their ranks
Jurgen Klopp has lauded the impact of Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips ahead of tomorrow’s game with Leeds United.
The centre-back has been thrust into the first-team spotlight this season amid injuries to some of the team’s big-name stars.
He hasn’t disappointed and deserves immense credit for the way he has carried himself when called upon during the current campaign.
The 24-year-old has played 15 times during the 2020/21 season and looks set to continue in the team.
Klopp has been impressed and has been discussing his impact with the club’s official media team.
“Nat Phillips is just an exceptional career so far, with all the things he did in the past and what he thought about and where he was and all these things.
“Now playing for Liverpool in the Champions League, Premier League, winning games, winning challenges. Probably the best heading statistics in the history of the Premier League I could imagine at least, it is unbelievable what the boy is doing there, and on top of that playing good football.
“So, it’s really nice. Obviously the start, or the restart for one, and the start of a proper career for both – that’s really nice.”
TBR View: Phillips playing for his future
It’s a strange thing to say when he’s playing so well but Phillips is definitely playing for his role next season.
When Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are fit, his place looks in jeopardy and he could revert to being a fringe player next season.
Phillips has been a superb player during the current campaign and there will certainly be a place in Klopp’s squad for him next season.
Whether it as a first-team regular remains to be seen and his form in the closing games could be integral.
Phillips is good in the air, strong in the tackle and works hard for the team.
Despite that, he looks to be playing for his future and could be merely a peripheral figure next season.
