Jurgen Klopp responds when asked if Gini Wijnaldum will sign Liverpool deal

Jurgen Klopp has told Amazon Prime Sport – – that he is hopeful Gini Wijnaldum will sign a new contract at Liverpool after the Dutch midfielder scored a stunning goal against Wolves on Sunday.

Liverpool kept the pressure on Tottenham Hotspur at the top of the Premier League table by beating Wolves easily at Anfield – as the Premier League champions welcomed back supporters for the first time since lockdown.

Wijnaldum scored the pick of the four goals, curling an effort into the top corner from the edge of the box. Mo Salah and Joel Matip also netted, while Nelson Semedo scored an own goal as Liverpool went level on points at the top.

Wijnaldum remains in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and could end his five-year stint at Liverpool if he does not put pen to paper. Asked about the £75,000-a-week () star’s future, Klopp responded optimistically.

“I hope so. You can see he plays all the time, we have a very good relationship,”

TBR’s view – Wijnaldum should be kept at Liverpool

But it is clear, that with Klopp’s comments, that Liverpool want to keep him. Indeed, it appears that the decision on his future needs to be made by the ex-Newcastle man – who is clearly yet to make that decision.

Now 30, Liverpool could easily hand Wijnaldum another 12 months or two years to shine in red. But Wijnaldum may feel he can get a longer, bigger contract at another club – and that may see him leave.

If Liverpool have the choice, they must keep him.
