Jurgen Klopp raves about ‘incredible’ Liverpool talent Rhys Williams

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on young defender Rhys Williams for his display in last night’s 5-0 drubbing of Atalanta in the Champions League

The Reds were in superb form as they blew away the Serie A side despite Klopp being forced to turn to youth in defence once again.

A Diogo Jota hat-trick and goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane saw Liverpool produce a devastating display.

Despite the quality on show at the back, it was Williams who was singled out for praise from a buzzing Klopp following the contest.

“We can start with Rhys – exceptional.

“I cannot imagine being 19-years-old and playing my second professional football game in the Champions League against Duvan Zapata, it’s incredible!

“I would have been nervous as hell, but the boy was not. Defending is obviously a common thing, and how the team defended tonight was absolutely incredible.”

Williams has done his chances of more football in Klopp’s team no harm at all.

His rival for a place in the team, Nathaniel Phillips, produced a Man of the Match display against West Ham at the weekend.

With that in mind, it was vital that he gave a good account of himself last night against a side who were superb in last season’s Champions League.

Development

It seems remarkable that Williams was on loan in the National League North with Kidderminster last season.

He showed his capabilities last night against some world-class performers and there could be more to come from the youngster.

The centre-back played 26 times on loan at Aggborough, learning his trade in men’s football.

Last night was a coming of age though and Klopp was clearly delighted.

Rhys Williams – remember the name!
