Jurgen Klopp praises Joe Gomez’s performance against Watford

Joe Gomez played at right-back for Liverpool in the 2-0 win over Watford at Anfield in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking to after the game, Klopp explained why he chose the England international, when he had James Milner as another option.

He also said that Gomez was outstanding and said that the defender should get more game time between now and the end of the season.

“He played a good game,” said Klopp of Gomez.

“It was a logical solution given the strength they had on the wings with really quick players.

“Joey did well defensively but also offensively as well. He should be really happy about it. It is no surprise we have quality on the bench.

“It’s a position he can play. It’s not his favourite position, his favourite position is centre-half and I get that. He is a really, really outstanding player for us in that position but he can play right back as well.”

Alexander-Arnold will come into the team when he is fit again, either against Benfica in the Champions League or against Manchester City.

But Gomez has offered a reminder of what he can do and he may hope for more games at the heart of defence during the vital run-in.

Klopp needs all of his players at top form and at full tilt every week and Gomez could not have done too much more to impress his manager.
