Jurgen Klopp makes dig about Liverpool forward to Roberto Martinez
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made a dig on Friday at Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez, regarding the role of Divock Origi in the national team.
Origi is proving his quality in the Reds squad this season as the second-choice striker and he netted a brilliant double against Everton in midweek.
The 24-year-old now has five goals in 18 games this campaign across all competitions and is likely to play an even more important role during a hectic December.
He’s turned out to be a bargain £10million () signing from Lille and has become an Anfield favourite sincere joined in 2014.
But Klopp insists that the centre-forward doesn’t get enough credit on the international stage and claimed he was pleased to see Belgium’s Martinez watch him in the Merseyside derby.
Origi has earned just six of his 28 senior caps for Belgium since Martinez was appointed in August 2016 and he’s often overlooked the Liverpool striker.
“I was really happy that Mr Martinez was in the stadium because he could watch [Origi}, could see his qualities because when he goes to the national team he never plays a second. That’s always interesting when he’s coming back with no game so it’s good that he saw that,”
TBR’s View:
It’s remarkable that Origi has had so few minutes for Belgium during the Martinez reign and surely his form for Liverpool should be recognised more by his international boss.
He shouldn’t be getting in the Belgium XI over an in-form Romelu Lukaku right now, but he’s proven at Anfield what a goalscoring threat he can be and his constant omission seems strange.
