Jurgen Klopp lavishes praise on player who Liverpool missed last season

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has lavished praise on Xherdan Shaqiri during his pre-match press conference ahead of this week’s Champions League clash with Atalanta .

Earlier this year it seemed as though the Switzerland international would be on his way out of Anfield but a move away from the club never materialised.

Shaqiri was introduced as a substitute on Saturday, setting up Diogo Jota to complete a 2-1 comeback victory against West Ham.

The 29-year-old missed a lot of the 2019/20 campaign and will now be hoping to win more opportunities in the Liverpool team.

Klopp’s comments certainly suggest that might be the case and could bode well for the man with 82 caps for his country.

“Shaqiri can play in many positions. He wasn’t involved because he was injured and sometimes players have bad runs with injuries. The calf gave him problems but it’s better now. We missed him last season.”

Shaqiri has played 45 games for Liverpool during a frustrating time of things at the club.

On his day he is capable of doing a job for the Reds, however, and a fit Shaqiri can be a useful addition to Klopp’s ranks.

Liverpool aren’t blessed with loads of players like Shaqiri. He is versatile, lethal on set-pieces and is capable of changing a game with his creativity.

Setting up the equaliser could do wonders for his confidence and supporters will hope there is more to come from the 29-year-old.
