Jurgen Klopp has a chance to honour Rhian Brewster promise
It seems as though it might be a quiet summer at Liverpool. that the Reds had shelved plans to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig in a £50 million deal this summer, amid the financial issues caused by the current global health crisis.
It means any changes to Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad will have to come from within, meaning he can keep a promise to one of his younger talents.
Rhian Brewster looked set for regular first-team action at Liverpool back in the summer of 2018. that Klopp had decided the club would not move for Werner, as he was ready to give Brewster a first-team chance.
Unfortunately, injury problems decimated Brewster’s campaign and he never got the chance to shine.
Last summer, after an impressive pre-season, Brewsterthat Klopp had promised the striker first-team football in 2019-20.
“Klopp spoke to me and told me, ‘You’re going to get your chance this year’ and I’m just waiting for that chance now so that I can prove him right.
“He’s not one of those managers you don’t want to speak to, he’s a great manager and he’s so down to earth.”
Klopp even spoke about Brewster’s chances for first-team football in 2019-20. As reported by the German spoke warmly of the ‘fantastic’ striker.
“I love the boy, he is fantastic player. Why should I play it down?.
“Rhian Brewster is a top striker, he is a top talent and I have told him already that he has an important role this year — but how important depends on him.”
Brewster featured in EFL Cup and FA Cup ties for the Reds but then, in January, it was decided he needed to head out on loan.
The youngster joined up with his former England under-17 coach Steve Cooper at Swansea City in January and has gone on to score four goals in 11 appearances for the Welsh side.
But, more importantly, he has remained clear of injuries and the 20-year-old is finally looking to have put his fitness woes behind him.
Klopp now has a chance to fulfill a promise to Brewster next season by forgetting entirely about the transfer market and promoting from within. Once again, it seems another summer will go by when Liverpool do not make a move for Werner. On this occasion, the 20-year-old Englishman must ensure he takes his chance.
